Staff and students meet for the first time in the Law School

New international students have been arriving from around the world at the University all week. Today, on 21 September 2017, the Law School had the first opportunity to welcome her latest members to the undergraduate programme in International Law. The 22 students this year come from Malawi, Cameroon, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, Laos and Papua New Guinea.

Invited to introduce themselves, the newcomers obliged and also explained where they came from and what motivated them to come and study in China, and at Zhejiang Gongshang University Law School. They spoke of their dreams and expectations. They spoke of their admiration for China, her culture, her people and her incredible growth in all fields. The new students expressed their excitement at finally being in Hangzhou, having heard about how lovely the city is.

Vice-Dean Professor Dr. Song Jie formally, and warmly, welcomed the students on behalf of the Law School. He outlined the unique characteristics of the programme, and what students could expect. He impressed upon them the need to apply themselves to their academic development, and also to reach out to staff members for further guidance and tutorship.

Other staff members also addressed the students. Some spoke of administrative matters and discipline, others drew from their experiences of living and studying abroad, and others provided advice on how to master the study of law in the context of this unusual programme offering students the opportunity to study Chinese law, topics in International Law and extensive exposure to comparative law studies. Staff members urged students to take the opportunity to master the Chinese language, make local friends, have some fun, and to be open to the mix of different cultures around them on campus.

Three student representatives from the Law School's newly established International Students' Department spoke as well. Co-Vice President Majeeda Mia introduced the new students to the activities of the group, and the facilities that are available to them. Co-Vice President Nazly Ahmed Amir Hafez Sadik shared her experiences of living in China and counselled the students on how to make the most of their time as Law students. The founding President of the International Students Department, Irufan Ahmed, also gave good advice on emerging from several years of demanding studies with the best outcome.
