A new international appointment for ZJGSU Law School's Distinguished Professor, Dr Suzannah Linton

The International Law Department of the Law School of Zhejiang Gongshang University is pleased to announce that at the recommendation of the President, HE Judge Fausto Pocar, the Council of the International Institute for Humanitarian Law (IIHL) in San Remo, Italy appointed our Distinguished Professor, Dr Suzannah Linton, to be a Member on 9 September 2017. 

Based at Villa Ormond in the Ligurian seaside town of San Remo in Italy, the IIHL ( is a private, independent and non-profit organisation. The Institute's primary objective, as set out in her Statute, is the promotion of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). In concrete terms, the IIHL is devoted to the implementation, development, application, teaching and dissemination of IHL in all its dimensions and contributes to the safeguarding and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms globally.

The activities of the Institute are internationally renowned. Consequently, it enjoys consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, and it has operational relationships with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, l'Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Commonwealth Secretariat and UNESCO.


The IIHL is also a fully accredited NATO Partnership Training Education Centre and a member of the OSCE Network of Think Tanks and Academic Institutions. It holds consultative status with the Council of Europe and regularly cooperates with other international organisations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Organisation for Migration, the European Union and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The Institute has a liaison office in Geneva which interacts with the United Nations office, diplomatic missions and other humanitarian organisation in Geneva.


The IIHL is particularly known for hosting multi-lingual annual courses on IHL and related issues such as international refugee/migration law for both the military and civilians. Among the leading publications produced by the IIHL are the San Remo Handbook on Rules of Engagement ( and the San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea (


In accordance with Article 4 of the Statute of the IIHL, only prominent figures who have particularly distinguished themselves through competence or activities in IHL and fields of relevance may be admitted by the Council as Members.
